The scope of the EU exemption for cost-sharing associations

In its judgment in CBO, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has given a broad interpretation of the VAT exemption for services of cost-sharing associations. In this article, the author comments on the arguments on which the ECJ based its decision and the potential risk that the exemption distorts competition. Finally, the author points out numerous aspects of the exemption that continue to lack clarity.
