This article is a transcription of the Mössner lecture, which was delivered on 29 May 2010 at the annual congress of the European Association of Tax Law Professors in Leuven (Belgium). The author provides an overview of the pertinent issues currently faced by the European Union that have been brought to light as a result of the recent financial crisis.
