The ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) Rules of Origin were amended and extended with two annexes at the 17th Meeting of the AFTA Council. In any free trade area, the rules of origin are crucial in determining which imports will benefit from tariff reductions. In this article, the authors discuss and compare the AFTA rules of origin from a practical perspective, particularly on its vulnerability to abuse.
