Academic Activities

Winners of the GTTC Universities Project

8 October 2018, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Global Tax Treaty Commentaries is IBFD’s leading product on the interpretation of tax treaties. Every year, a tax treaty-related topic is selected for a special activity with universities. This year’s topic was “Empirical Evidence in Tax Treaties: In search for the ‘Hidden Tax Treaty Model’”. The challenge, accepted by 15 universities, was to find the hidden model behind their own domestic tax treaty network.

The final round was held at the IBFD Head Office on 8 October. The jury, composed of Frans Vanistendael, Wim Wijnen and Luis Flavio Neto awarded the first prize to McGill University (Canada). Our sincere congratulations!

Next year’s competition will be on the Multilateral Instrument, and the competition has already started.

Conference on Digital and Sharing Economy

15-16 October 2018, Huelva, Spain

IBFD supported the “Challenges and opportunities of the tax authorities in the digital era” conference organized by the CEU Cardenal Herrera University. The conference is one of the outputs of a research project won by our fellow Álvaro Antón and financed by the Spanish Minister of Science.

The project on “The tax system in the era of the sharing economy: from clarification to new ways of public-private cooperation” started last June and will continue for 2 years. During this period, IBFD and CEU Cardenal Herrera will join their efforts to come up with solutions to the challenges emerging from the digitalization of our economy. At this conference, besides Álvaro, IBFD was represented by Betty Andrade, João Nogueira and Leopoldo Parada.

ILADT Congress

4-9 November 2018, Montevideo, Uruguay

We had a record presence at this year’s Instituto Latinoamericano de Derecho Tributario (ILADT). Pasquale Pistone chaired a panel on the taxation of the digital economy.

In addition, Betty Andrade, João Nogueira and Carlos Weffe were speakers in the following seminars, respectively: Multilateral Instrument; the role of the Ombudsman; and tax fraud and money laundering. Betty and Carlos were also national reporters for one of the topics (group taxation). IBFD was also represented by Diana Calderón and Horacio Jarquin.
