Stéphane Austry has been a Partner at CMS Bureau Francis Lefebvre since 2007. He coordinates the tax litigation and controversy group of the firm on domestic and international tax issues and heads the Tax Practice Group of the CMS network. Mr Austry, as a former member of the Conseil d'Etat, France's highest administrative court, is an authority in handling high-profile litigations. He also enjoys an extensive experience on international taxation and the interpretation and application of tax treaties. From 2010, he is Associate Professor in Tax Law and Tax Litigation at the Sorbonne Law School - Université Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne.
After having attended Ecole Nationale d'Administration (ENA) from 1991 to 1993, Mr Austry began his career at the Conseil d'Etat. He went on to become Advisor on tax policy to the Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry and the Secretary of State for Budget, from 1997 to 2000. He then returned to work for the Conseil d'Etat as Government Commissioner for one of its tax chambers. From 2003 to 2007, he was Financial Counsellor to the French Embassy in Japan.
Mr Austry has written many articles on domestic and international tax issues. He is a member of the International Fiscal Association (IFA) and of the International Tax Group (ITG). He was co-reporter with Michel Collet for France at the IFA annual meeting (2010) on tax treaties and tax avoidance: application of anti-avoidance provisions. He has been ranked Tax Lawyer of the Year 2010 in France by Best Lawyer. A French native speaker, he is fluent in English and also speaks Japanese.
