Paulus Merks is an international tax partner with Houthoff Amsterdam. Before joining Houthoff, he was a partner at DLA Piper LLP, both in New York and in Amsterdam. He has previously worked as an international tax lawyer for EY in Amsterdam, Paris, Chicago and San Jose (California).
Mr Merks is an expert in international tax law and advises on mergers and acquisitions, public offerings, reorganizations, financial products and structured finance transactions. He has an extensive practice advising US-based and non-US-based corporate groups in respect of structuring their operations and acquisitions around the globe.
In addition to his work as an international tax partner, Mr Merks is a regular speaker at international tax conferences. He is a (co-)author of books and articles on international tax law and a guest lecturer at IBFD and at the advanced LLM program in International Tax Law in Leiden. Mr Merks graduated in Tax Law from the University of Amsterdam in 1994 and has an LLM in US Tax Law from the University of San Francisco, which he gained in 2002. In addition, he is a member of the American Bar Association, the International Fiscal Association, the European-American Tax Institute and the Group for Research on European and International Taxation.
