Ernie Lai King
Ernie Lai King is a tax practitioner with 36 years’ experience, focusing on mergers and acquisitions (local and cross-border), dispute resolution, opinions, structured finance and international tax.
He served as the Head of Tax and Africa -Asia practice for two of the Top 4 law firms in South Africa and was the group tax consultant of two major listed Top 20 companies. He has extensive experience in the commercial sector.
Mr. Lai King was appointed as a member of the Income Tax Special Court of Appeal (a State President appointment) in 1993 and engages with the Commissioner’s Office of the SA Revenue Services and National Treasury on general tax matters, tax policy and new tax legislation prior to their promulgation into law. Prior to the introduction of capital gains tax (CGT) into South Africa, he was invited to participate in nationwide seminars on CGT conducted by the Office of the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS), with specific implication of the impact of CGT on trusts.
Mr. Lai King has served as deputy chairman and chairman of the South African Chamber of Business Tax Committee and council board member of the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners.
He is recognized as a respected thought leader and is regularly quoted on tax and economic issues in the media – print, radio and television.
Mr. Lai King is recommended in Chambers Global Tax Consultants, received the Dealmakers Annual Awards 2013 – Individual Deal Maker of the Year (SA) and received a Best Lawyers of South Africa award for Tax.
He authored the South African chapter of the Cambridge University Press treatise," A Global Analysis of Tax Treaty Disputes", convened by the London School of Economics Law Department.
