IBFD's 80th Anniversary

IBFD's 80th Anniversary

IBFD 80: Onwards and upwards!

Jan Maarten SlagterquoteThank you for visiting our website and joining us in celebrating IBFD’s 80th anniversary, and of course, congratulations on this special occasion! Congratulations are in order because you, as a member of the international tax community (which you are, by virtue of visiting our site), have made our continuing success over eight decades possible, either as a customer, scholar, contributor, (former) employee or one of our many friends around the world. As the home of international taxation, we are happy to be your home, too.

We are proud of what our predecessors have achieved in the course of our history: IBFD has become the pre-eminent research centre and publishing house in international taxation. We have trained tax professionals all over the world and have assisted governments and international organizations in meeting important challenges. We are proud, and eager to continue their work and build on the foundations they have laid. Here’s to the next 80 years!"

Jan Maarten Slagter, CEO, IBFD

80th Anniversary Messages

We are delighted to share with you some of the celebratory messages we have received commemorating our 80th anniversary.

Murray Clayson

quoteThe International Fiscal Association is delighted to convey best wishes for IBFD’s 80th anniversary.‎ IFA is often referred to as IBFD’s ‘sister’ organization; one might indeed say (non-identical) twin sister, given that IFA too was formed in the Netherlands on 12 February 1938. A close cooperative bond has existed ever since. An 80th birthday may be regarded by some as the frontier of venerable old age. But IBFD, as befits a modern scientific organisation, vibrantly and technologically maintains its pre-eminent global role in international tax research and professional information delivery. Congratulations!"

Murray Clayson, President of the International Fiscal Association

Nina E. Olsonquote Congratulations on 80 years of serving as a world expert on cross border taxation. I am delighted to be a part of IBFD’s 80th anniversary celebration and honored that IBFD is hosting the 3rd International Conference on Taxpayer Rights in Amsterdam. IBFD’s work goes beyond one conference and serves to promote taxpayer rights throughout the world. Your longevity has proven your commitment to improving tax administration in general, and access to information in particular. I look forward to the next 80 years!"

Nina E. Olson, National Taxpayer Advocate, Internal Revenue Service, Washington DC, United States

Porus F Kakaquote Many hearty congratulations to the IBFD, which celebrates 80 years since its inception in 1938! I have been privileged to be associated with the IBFD since the early 1990s. My association as an author, as a speaker at its conferences, as President of its sister organization, the IFA, and now as Trustee, has given me a ringside view of its growth and stature. Its renowned publications, Tax Research Platform, international training and joint conferences with the IFA and others have come to symbolize excellence in cross-border taxation at the highest level.
I extend my best wishes to the IBFD for continued excellence and success in the years to come. I look forward to being present at many conferences celebrating this unique anniversary over the course of 2018."

Porus F Kaka, Senior Advocate (India), IBFD Board of Trustees

Roy RohatgiquoteAs a long-standing admirer of IBFD, on behalf of myself and the Foundation for International Taxation in India, we would like to send our best wishes to IBFD on its 80th anniversary. Its contribution in imparting outstanding service in all aspects of the study of international taxation principles and their global application over the years has been unparalleled.
My association with IBFD goes back to my research in its well-reputed library in Amsterdam in the 1990s while writing my book on Basic International Taxation. IBFD has recently acquired the publication rights for future editions and is planning to publish an updated third edition.
Recently, we held our annual conference jointly with IBFD and in cooperation with the OECD. We are delighted to be associated with IBFD and look forward to its continuing professional support to us in the future."

Roy Rohatgi, Founding Trustee and Conference Director, Foundation for International Taxation (India)

Brenda EngelbrechtquoteI have been a user of IBFD for more than 10 years and have seen the many improvements to the database over these years. We, as a business, are becoming more and more dependent on the system to issue opinions across our Group (we operate in some 65 countries across the world), with this having become easier over the past few years as the IBFD team adds more relevant tax information to the Tax Research Platform. I look forward to seeing this database growing further in the future.
Congratulations on the successful 80 years, and good luck with the next!"

Brenda Engelbrecht, Group Tax Executive, Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Limited (South Africa)

Sam SimquoteMy heartiest congratulations to friends at IBFD for 80 years of success. IBFD has come a long way since its formation in 1938 and has firmly established itself as the thought leader in international taxation and a purveyor of high-quality research and training trusted by generations of practitioners around the world. IBFD’s rigorous scientific approach is more relevant than ever in this age of disruption to the international tax norms arising from BEPS and the digital economy.
Happy 80th anniversary, and best wishes for another 80 years and beyond."

Sam Sim, Regional VP Region XI (Europe, Asia & Latam), Tax Executive Institute (Singapore)

Stef van WeeghelquoteWhen IBFD was established in 1938 as a not-for-profit foundation by representatives of ministries of finance, multinational enterprises, law firms, accounting firms and universities – the same group that founded the International Fiscal Association in that same year (see Tax Tales from the Second Millennium, Ferdinand H.M. Grapperhaus, IBFD 1998) – little did these founders expect that IBFD would grow to be the leading independent tax research organization it is today. My first encounter with IBFD was in 1987, and in 1988, together with my mentor at Stibbe, professor and longtime IBFD Trustee Frank van Brunschot, I co-authored my first article in European Taxation. That same year, I attended my first IFA Congress, in Amsterdam. It was the start of a long and warm relationship with both organizations. I sincerely congratulate IBFD and IFA on their 80th anniversaries!"

Stef van Weeghel, Chair IBFD Board of Trustees; immediate past-chair IFA Permanent Scientific Committee (Netherlands)

Arun AnandagiriquoteLongevity, they say, is one of the hallmarks of success and greatness! By any measure, IBFD has set a high benchmark for excellence in the world of tax content and training. Our heartiest congratulations on the 80th anniversary of IBFD, which ought to be a moment of pride for the people who make it happen day in and day out! The Taxsutra team’s best wishes to IBFD to continue its journey of excellence for many years ahead, and we are excited to build on our content partnership!"

Arun Anandagiri, Group Editor, Taxsutra (India)

Peter EssersquoteMy sincere congratulations on IBFD’s 80th anniversary! In 1938, compared to 2018, the world looked totally different. The prospects of a second world war were abundantly clear; nations were seriously divided and powerless to find joint solutions. The establishment of IFA and IBFD in 1938 were clear messages from the tax world that only collaboration, understanding and respect between people from different countries can help to achieve and maintain world peace. Everything that has been achieved in these 80 years by these organizations deserves great respect. Especially, I would like to thank IBFD for its great support for the EUCOTAX Wintercourse. We experienced this support already in 1993, at the start of the Wintercourse, and we are delighted that next year, after 26 successful Wintercourses in a row, IBFD will host the 27th EUCOTAX Wintercourse (on Sustainable Taxation and Developing Countries) from 4-11 April 2019. In this way, IBFD supports talented tax students from all over the world."

Peter Essers, Professor of Tax Law at the Fiscal Institute Tilburg of Tilburg University and Coordinator of the EUCOTAX Wintercourse (the Netherlands)
