Types of cookies

There are two types of cookies, direct and indirect, often respectively referred to as first- and third-party cookies.

Direct or first-party cookies are cookies that are issued by the web site that you are visiting.
These cookies can only be read by the people operating the website you are visiting. Direct cookies serve several functions, such as remembering a user name, password or items remaining in a shopping cart prior to an online sale.

Indirect or third-party cookies are issued by a site that is different than the one you are currently surfing. Indirect cookies track the user’s behaviour over time and across different websites. Some websites use indirect cookies for targeted online advertising. Other indirect cookies only track user behaviour on one website. For example, the website might use a third party analytics company who will set their own cookie to perform this service.
